Q – What cabinetry is included in a Coburn System?
Models CB-72, CB-81 & CB-93, are sold as complete operatory packages that include a dentist wash sink, mirror dispenser cabinet (above wash sink), assistant upper and lower cabinetry with wash sink, assistant corner computer cabinetry with upper cupboard, and the patented 2 o’clock delivery system on the 12 o’clock wall with all upper cabinetry.
Not included are the following optional extras: lighting, monitor arm, a mounting bracket for film X-ray light box, and stainless steel valances. Please see price list for complete details.
Q – What is the difference between models CB-81 & CB-93?
The length of the lower assistant counter is the only difference between CB-81 and CB-93. The upper cabinetry is identical for both models to ensure a wall mounted X-ray cone will reach the patients mouth. The assistants counter length on model CB-93 is 93”, versus 81” for the CB-81. The CB-93 includes an extra 12” cupboard below the assistant counter, which is used as a waste cabinet with the counter cutout positioned above.
Note: There is little cost difference between the two models so we recommend installing the larger unit whenever possible. Dental assistants tend to appreciate as much counter space as possible.
Q - What size room do I need to accommodate a Coburn Treatment Center?
The recommended room size is 9 ½ feet wide by 11 feet long, although installations in rooms measuring 9 feet by 10 ½ have also worked fine. Many of our treatment rooms have been 12 feet long and this extra foot adds an enjoyable amount of space in which to live at work.
Q – The Coburn suites have 45-degree corner cabinets, does this mean the walls have to conform to this shape?
No, your room can be rectangular without an angled corner. The angled corner concept is provided to create wider entrances when there are a series of rooms in a row, while also creating interesting interior architecture and appealing "traffic flow".
The upper corner cabinet features an extended back panel that ends just below the assistant’s counter, creating a 45-degree angled panel (false wall) between the upper, and lower cabinets, and serves as a terrific cable raceway. Please see our Pre-installation section within the Coburn Installation Guide for complete details and recommendations on wall configurations.
Q – How are Coburn packages shipped?
All cabinets are shipped pre-assembled with the doors mounted, and individually wrapped. Cabinets are then placed in protective skid-size cartons with interior packaging materials such as corner pads and edge protectors. Solid surface counters are packaged in a plywood crate, together with backsplash components and assistant lower cabinet base.
A standard CB-81 or CB-93 package ships on 3 standard size skids, plus the (1) crate measuring 22”W x 86” (CB-81) or 98” (CB-93).
Q – Who is responsible for installation?
Coburn Dental Systems does not include installation. Customer must make arrangements through their local Coburn reseller, or independent contractor.
Q – Do you provide assembly instructions?
Yes, we provide an easy to follow Assembly Guide that also includes a Pre-Assembly section for contractor’s reference of plumbing, wiring, and chair location. This Assembly Guide is also available as a PDF file.
Q – How much time is required to install a complete treatment room?
This of course depends on many variables such as access to room, the state of the room, and the experience of the installation team. We suggest allowing one full day to install 2-suites. Single rooms are typically installed within 4-5 hours.
Q – Does the Coburn package include the hand piece controller and vacuum suction?
No. The controller and vacuum manager must be purchased through your dental supplier. This helps keep the costs down by eliminating another overhead, and provides you with more choices at time of purchase.
The solid surface team tray-housing compartment includes a standard cutout to accommodate a panel mount DCI hand piece controller, model # 4415 and a DCI vacuum package with autoclavable premium valves, model # 5405.
Q – How does a Coburn Treatment Room differ from other systems in terms of supporting my assistant’s needs?
Our design supports the tenants of fourhanded dentistry whereby the dentist needs to be free to focus on the patient and work area (the patient's mouth), and assistant wants to assist the dentist comfortably and efficiently with instrument and material flow. When the dental assistant is able to work efficiently and uninterrupted, the dentist’s productivity naturally increases. Specifically, the Coburn System supports the assistant through:
- Complete access to all instruments and hand pieces
- Ideal location of instruments and hand pieces without reaching and turning
- System reduces fatigue – for assistant and operator
- System reduces trips to make-ready station by accommodating necessary materials/supplies
- Instrument clean-up and preparation can be performed from seated position
- Environment supports ideal workflow patterns
- Computer access is incorporated within assistant’s corner cabinet
- Wash sink and patented dispensing cabinet is conveniently located

Q – How does 2 o’clock pick-up compare to side delivery?
Side delivery places the hand pieces out of reach to the assistant, and restricts freedom of movement for patient and doctor. Please see 3 questions below for further rationale.
Q – How does 2 o’clock pick-up compare to rear delivery?
The 2 o’clock delivery differs from Rear Delivery by positioning the hand pieces parallel to the dentists left arm to prevent having to turn, or twist. The hand pieces can be transferred and pre-positioned by the left hand, to the right, or simply picked up by the right hand.
Q – How does 2 o’clock pick-up compare to over-the-patient delivery?
Over-the-patient, or trans-thoracic delivery systems require the assistant to turn and twist to access hand pieces and instruments. This restricts proper fourhanded dentistry and can lead to added fatigue. Also, patient anxiety can increase when equipment is in their direct view.
Q – What is the rationale behind the 2 o’clock delivery system?
The Coburn patented 2 o’clock delivery concept was developed in response to clinical research and work pattern studies that demonstrated the least disruptive and most accessible position for hand pieces is within reach of the dental assistant and dentist. Where we put something depends on who uses it, how often it is used and how urgently it is required when used.
For example, the air/water syringe: Who uses it? The assistant and the dentist, so the frequency is high and sometimes the urgency factor is also operative. For this reason, the air/water syringe is on a beautifully functional patented tool holder that places this important device three or four inches from the patient’s mouth on the assistant’s side. The complete range of suction devices are also logically deployed on the same tool holder in an arrangement that supports the dentist or the assistant using the syringe and the suction tubes in an ergonomically comfortable and supportive way. When a given hand piece is in use the hose gently rests on the dentists lap which helps to reduce the combined weight of the tubing and hand piece. During or after a procedure, the assistant is able to change burs by having direct access at all times.
Q – If I want to maintain a side delivery system, can the Coburn System accommodate this?
Yes. Although we strongly advocate the 2 o’clock delivery system, there is no reason that a side delivery system cannot be integrated. There are so many advantages of the Coburn environment and cabinetry package that will still enhance overall work patterns and productivity.
Q - What is your thought on the Cuspidor?
We do not advocate the use of a cuspidor as it restricts the assistant’s access and movement.
Q – What is the intended function of the hygiene tray?
The hygiene tray, or solo operator tray positions the tray in the transfer area i.e. the instrument passing area just where a well assisted dentist would be passed instruments. This tray makes it natural for a hygienist to pick up a mirror or a suction device with the left hand while simultaneously picking up a scaler or an air/water syringe with the right hand, without twisting.
Q – Is there any research to support the Coburn 2 o’clock delivery system?
The Canadian Department of Industry provided Dr. Coburn funding to support a memo-motion comparative study of his office and 9 others. Filmed from above, each dentist carried out the same dental procedure, namely, a two surface restoration on an upper left bicuspid. Details of the study were reported in an Oral Health article, and are available upon request.
Q – What was the outcome of this study?
An important outcome was the realization that there is a tremendous variation in efficiency from one office to another. One assisted dentist’s focus was only a little better than an unassisted operator. In retrospect, it is useful to carefully design your team work patterns, then design the workplace to support or encourage optimum work patterns. As a result of this study, Dr. Coburn has refined the Coburn System to the present treatment room that reflects progressive evolutionary changes now incorporated within the system.
Q – How flexible is the Coburn package?
While some may offer, “one operatory a billion possibilities” based on the design school ‘if you don’t know where to put something put it on wheels’ Coburn suggests a different approach. The approach has been to determine, where each item would ideally be stowed, leaving only desirable and useful flexibility.
Q - Do you manufacture your own cabinetry?
Yes, our parent company, Inveco Product Designs & Marketing Ltd., manufacturers all cabinetry in-house at a factory in Aurora, ON. Inveco was founded in 1983 by the current president, Greg Jones, and is recognized as a leading office furniture manufacturer and importer, serving dealer channels throughout North America – see www.inveco.com
Q – What is the connection between SmartSpace, Coburn Systems, and Inveco?
