Don Coburn graduated in dentistry from the University of Toronto in 1951 and practiced dentistry in the Hamilton area for 43 years and now resides near Collingwood, Ontario.
Don’s interests in dentistry included restorative dentistry in general with an emphasis on cosmetic and functional harmony, ergonomics, four–handed dentistry, and dental environmental design.
In addition to dental practice, he was a Clinical Instructor in Crown and Bridge and Restorative dentistry at U of T for 10 years and lectured in Ceramics and Office Design; he also served as a Teaching Assistant at the Pankey Institute In Key Biscayne.
On the Board of Oral Health, he was Associate Editor of Practice Management and then later, Occlusion, for a total of 22 years.
He co-founded Cox Systems (later The Group at Cox) where he was Research Director for many years.
In 1994, on the occasion of their 125th Anniversary, the Hamilton Academy of Dentistry presented Don with an Award for Clinical Excellence in Dentistry.

A long time member of Canadian Academy of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, Don was elected to Honorary Membership in 2001, in recognition of Exceptional Services and Devotion to the Advancement of the Science and Art of Dentistry.
In 2002, the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, honored Don as an Alumnus of Distinction.
Over his career, Don enjoyed his involvement with the American Equilibration Society, The American Academy of Practice Administration and the Hamilton and Toronto Crown and Bridge Study Clubs.
Don practice d with his son, Dr. Andrew Coburn, for 13 years until Don’s retirement from the practice . In the ensuing years, Don and Andy worked together to develop a high performance, ergonomically sound treatment room and supplied about 100 cabinetry-based delivery systems through Coburn Dental Systems Inc.
The Coburn’s have sold Coburn Dental Systems to Greg Jones, the new owner and CEO. Together they continue to explore and define comfort and efficiency in the dental treatment room.
